  Alan Rickman's Passing

  alan rickman, best known to my generation as prof. severus snape from the harry potter film franchise, has passed away due to cancer at the age of 69.. growing up with a witness mother, anything related to science fiction and fantasy was looked down upon, so, naturally, i was a rebel rebel (oh david bowie...).. just wanted to let any potterheads know the news and that even if you feel like you'll never be free of the deadly watchtower, you're not alone and there's hope.. always..

  I've never seen Harry Potter, but loved him in Sense and Sensibility and Galaxy Quest. Amazing actor, and that voice...his voice was hypnotic, I could watch that scene where he reads to Kate Winslet all day. Such a tragic loss.

  governing body members are usually people who have never held down, a real god honest job.

  never payed taxes like most of us, and probably have never cooked their own meals.. im sorry.....im venting, but it burns my hyde....that they kicked so many old timers to the curb.....as they go live in luxury, in their lake-front condos in warwick.

  Governing body members are usually people who have never held down, a real god honest job. Never payed taxes like most of us, and probably have never cooked their own meals.

  Is that really true? I don't know much about their backgrounds, but if they aren't being inducted into the GB until middle age, they must've had some kind of employment in their youth or young adulthood.

  Are Bethelites Buying and Preparing their own Food?

  samuel herd made the following statement at the 2015 annual meeting regarding the reduction of services at bethel.. we will be reducing personnel at bethel.

  some bethel family members will be invited to serve in the field.

  in addition to their regular work, bethel family members will be caring for many of the services that were previously provided by fellow bethelites.. .

  Wives doing all the cleaning, cooking and laundry? Huh? Is this 1918? or 1960? Bethel wives work at Bethel just as hard as their husbands do!

  I believe TakeOffTheCrown was referring to the GB's wives, not the regular Bethelite wives. Certainly they have enough time to fry some bacon and eggs for their men, don't they? What exactly do GB wives do all day?

  is there a way i can successfully live a double life?

  don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to get engaged in activities that are condemnable according to the *bible* (not the *wt*) standards.

  i figured that the only way i can get the brothers and sisters to leave me along is by pretending that i am an unemployed drop out.

  I figured that the only way I can get the brothers and sisters to leave me along is by pretending that I am an unemployed drop out.

  A better option would be to stop associating with them so you'll no longer have to play these games, but for some reason you seem unable/unwilling to do that. You can pretend to be miserable, but didn't you say you've already been counseled about your bad attitude? They will always find something to criticize you about. When will you say enough is enough?

  Watchtower crackdown on anointed expansion - are they reaching for a solution to the expanding numbers problem?

  i think the january study watchtower is a concerted attempt to reduce the numbers claiming to be anointed.

  but i love the sneaky way they go about it this time.

  The GB is sure trying to cover all their bases:
  

  • The anointed are anointed because they said so. We can't change this rule without calling our own anointing into question. But If you wonder if you are, you ain't. Most likely, you ain't.
  • If you ain't, don't be a hater to those who are. If you are, you're lying but unfortunately we can't prove it.
  • Don't ask these lying liars who lie how they knew. You only want to know so you can claim angel status too–admit it.
  • The remnant is going up, which pisses us off but there's nothing we can do so we'll blame it on the nutcases. Either way, ignore it–you aren't going to heaven anyway.
  • If you still think you're anointed, don't go around saying "neener, neener." It's not like you're part of the FDS (which is what really counts).

  Slightly O/T, but it's been ages since I've paid this much attention to the WT. I was struck by the simplicity of some of the questions. E.g.: "What questions will we consider in this article? What questions will we consider in the next article? What questions will be answered in this article?"

  The answers to these questions are literally more questions. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and say these are written in so kids have something easy to answer and can participate. And maybe they really were this basic when I was attending but my memory is foggy. I can't believe I used to stress out over studying this stuff.

  i used to enjoy being able to distinguish different local accents, but for some reason i've got worse at it.

  i was thinking about this today when i was listening to bette midler on the scottish radio.

  i thought to myself i quite liked her accent and also that it reminded me of someone else.

  It's interesting that some of you say you have no accent since I was taught that everyone has an accent. Maybe you mean your accent doesn't match your birthplace? I'm born and raised in the southeast U.S. but have no prominent southern accent when I speak. Yet, every time I take one of those "What is your accent?" quizzes, they almost always place me squarely in the south, which is correct. But may be due more to my vocabulary than my pronunciation. I say "soda" instead of "pop"; "buggy" instead of "trolley"; things like that.

  My local public tv station has started airing Annabel Langbein's cooking shows. I'd never heard of her but I guess she's famous? She has what sounds like an Aussie accent, but more posh. I think she's from New Zealand. Is her accent typical of New Zealanders? I didn't like it much which is strange because I do like most Aussie accents. I'm even surprised I picked up on the difference in Annabel's but it was just so...odd.

  i spent some time here awhile back as an unbelieving mate of a jw wife.

  i learned a lot, and was able to be supportive and understanding when she decided to leave the jw.. unfortunately, my son seems to have internalized many of the jw teachings.

  That's a start. But after the foundation of your faith is taken away, then what? You realize there will be no paradise, evildoers won't be destroyed, etc., but where do you go from there? It's almost like grieving a death. He's going to have to reexamine his values, create a belief system, and figure out what his purpose in life is. All without the JW faith as a basis. Truth is freeing, but can also be overwhelming. Maybe I'm projecting, as this is something I struggle with as well.

  What did you have for Christmas dinner?

  my inlaws are polish, though my husband is a 3rd generation american, but the food traditions have stuck around.. we have christmas eve dinner starting with red beet soup with sour cream, pierogies filled with mashed potatoes or saurkraut, ham, polish sausage sliced and cooked with saurkraut, turkey (that part is american), krischickies (likely spelled wrong) which are crispy pastries dipped in powdered sugar, and apple pie (also american.).

  there are goodnatured threats toward bad children who may need to get their dupa busted (butt spanked) and therefore santa will bring figismachen.

  i also love golabkis (ground beef and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves), but these were not served this time.

  Not a dinner, but I did have my first fruitcake. Wanted to see what all the fuss was about since it seems to be a very polarizing dessert. Good flavor and I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't buy it again. I liked the candy and nuts and cake, just not all together. Too many contrasting textures.

  And now thanks to Outlaw I gotta rewatch that Christmas episode of Mr. Bean.
